He has a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame. And yet, Gregory’s most recent tour has nothing to do with comedy clubs. The longtime social activistis on a nationwide recruiting tour with the nonprofit National Congress of Black Women. Gregory is also using the platform to espouse the benefits of healthy living.

It’s no secret that African-Americans lag behind on many health indicators. But is a comedian with a Y chromosome really qualified to speak about women’s health issues? Gregory thinks so.

“Health is health. There’s not a male apple and a female apple,” says Gregory, an outspoken vegetarian who once campaigned to help a 1,200-pound man lose weight.

Get African-American women healthy, and the effect with trickle down into the entire black community, Gregory reasons.

“If you learned how to cook, you didn’t learn from your dad. You didn’t learn from your brother,” the near-octogenarian said. “Once you target the women, a whole lot of things change.”
